Durham gives us both kinds of job. In the neighborhoods around downtown and Duke the houses were finished long before anyone ran a category cable, so the work starts with a walk: how the cable gets from the rack to the room, what the crawl space and the attic will allow, and which walls can be opened and closed again without the plaster telling on us. Out in the newer construction we are on the drawings instead, marking keypads and drops before framing. The design changes with the house. The standard does not.
